Camp Janus is an annual camping adventure for children from the age of 5 to 15 years, who have sustained a burn injury. Camp Janus is staffed by a multi-disciplinary volunteer team of professionals from a wide spectrum of the community. This team of volunteers will provide a positive, recreational, therapeutic and educational experience for all campers. The team will seek to provide a safe, non-threatening, pleasant environment, which fosters in the children improved self-confidence and encourages their interaction with peers. Each counselor will bring enthusiasm, dedication, and the willingness to teach. Camp Janus will provide new challenges, friendships, and rewards for the children.Camp Janus is a unique recreational, therapeutic, and educational opportunity for children who have recovered from burns. The children have an opportunity to socialize with their peers in a pleasant out-of-doors-camp environment where both their physical and psychosocial recovery is enhanced and where physical challenges are only incidental. The Camp Janus project was initially established in 1986 as an official sesquicentennial activity sanctioned by the Governor of the State of Texas organized and supervised by an array of volunteers with a special humanitarian interest in the care of burned children. Although Camp Janus initially was a project of members of the Hermann Hospital burn care team supported by funds provided by grateful adult burn survivors, the project now boasts a volunteer staff from the Hermann Children's Hospital, the Hermann Burn Center, the Houston Fire Department, the Shriner's Burns Hospital, members of the Phoenix Society, recovered adult burn patients and others, selected and approved by the Camp Janus Board. The Camp Janus facility used is Camp for All (www.campforall.org), located 12 miles from Brenham, Texas and provides the site for this annual three-and-a-half day camping experience that provides an opportunity for swimming, fishing, canoeing, arts and crafts, and other exciting activities. Camp For All (CFA) is a barrier-free, fully accessible camp working to enrich the lives of children and adults with chronic illnesses or disabilities and works to serve those with special needs and their families through a variety of unique programs and facilities. Since its inception, Camp Janus has been extremely successful in accomplishing its purpose. The Camp Janus weekend is completely free for the children including local transportation to and from the camp. Funding for the camp is provided through a grant from the Children's Miracle Network Telethon, other local agencies including the Houston Fire Fighters Burned and Crippled Children's Fund and through the generosity of many private donors. Children age 5 to 15, who have sustained burns, and with full parental or guardian consent, may attend. Enrollment is limited and must be approved by the Camp Janus board.
